What is the difference between photovoltaic and solar panels?

In general, the difference between photovoltaic panels and solar panels is that photovoltaic cells are an integral part of solar panels. Solar panels consist of many individual photovoltaic (PV) cells connected together.

There are two types of photovoltaic systems:

Single crystal silicon

Single-crystal photovoltaic cells are made of a single large crystal of silicon. They are cut from cylindrical ingots of crystalline silicon.

The advantage of single-crystal cells is that they are very efficient at converting sunlight into electricity. The downside is that they can be more expensive than polycrystalline cells, so you'll typically see monocrystalline silicon used in high-end solar panels.

Polycrystalline

Polycrystalline photovoltaic cells are made of many small silicon crystals, which are cast from rectangular silicon ingots.

The advantage of polycrystalline cells is that they are cheaper to manufacture than single-crystal cells. The drawback is that they are not as efficient as single-crystal cells at converting sunlight into electricity. You'll usually find polysilicon in products like solar calculators and small solar lights.

Is solar power alternating current or direct current?

Solar panels generate direct current: sunlight hitting the panels stimulates the flow of electrons, which creates an electric current. Because these electrons are flowing in the same direction, the current is direct.

How do photovoltaic cells work?

Photovoltaic (PV) cells are made from two or more layers of semiconductor material, most commonly silicon. When photovoltaic cells are exposed to sunlight, they create an electric field between the layers. This causes electrons to flow through the silicon photovoltaic cell, producing direct current (DC) electricity.

Photovoltaic cells are connected together in modules that make up solar panels. The module is then connected to an inverter, which converts the direct current generated by the photovoltaic cell into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is the type of electricity used in your home.

Solar panels are connected together in arrays to generate enough electricity to power your home or business.
